Top 5: Songs That Exude Black Pride!

Not matter what you’re feeling, you can always find a song that compliments your mood. As of late, I find myself gravitating toward more uplifting music. Not just in rhythm, but the message and context too.

Given the current state of affairs, I wanted to share some of my favourite tunes that exude black empowerment.

1. BROWN SKIN by INDIA ARIE

From her album Acoustic Soul, this song celebrates all the beauty that comes from being adorned with brown skin. Or better yet, when melanin intertwines. There is so much confidence and pride in India’s words. A message we can all relate to!

Favourite lyrics: Skin so brown, lips so round Baby, how can I be down?

2. OMO DUDU by BLACK MOTION

Nothing says I’m black and I’m proud than this for me. From the use of traditional African instruments to Wumni’s soulful voice.

This song invites you to move your feet and hips in rhythmic celebration.

Ps. Omo Dudu loosely translates to black child.

Favourite lyric: Remember who you are, black gold of the sun, your light will always shine!

3. MELANIN by SECRETT

This song make you wanna throw it around in a pro-black circle!

Secrett speaks on the fact that when features normally attributed to black women (e.g full lips, bodacious bodies) are seen on white women, they suddenly become more attractive. She also points out that black women are successful academics, creatives, business women, professionals and just how we generally slay in life!

Favourite lyric: We get it from our Mommas, Know she look 10 years younger, Them other gals age like bananas!

4. BLACK BOYS by BASHY

What a throwback to the days I was happy to roam around Westfield all day without buying anything!

Bashy pays homage to all the black men that came before him. All the boys that became men on the UK music scene, creating a space and a platform for the young, raw talent to be heard.

Favourite lyric: No we ain’t hooligans, just young and talented Nubians.

5. BROTHA by ANGIE STONE

Come through Angie with a soulful ode to our black kings. The song speaks on the unmatched strength possessed by black men. But more importantly, she is a black woman praising all our brothas for their efforts and struggles. It’s a celebration of black love, at its purest.

Favourite lyric: Going through thick and thin, brothas you’re gonna win – I’m so proud of you.
